The Art of Sounds | Listening With the Eyes
Visual Artist ‘King’, as he calls himself (@jkingtheartist if you want to see his IG), has found a niche that may just change how we do art. In a nutshell, The Art of Sounds is a platform where you’re encouraged to “draw what you hear”, or listen with your eyes as you translate music into art. Guests can draw using equipment provided, while artists can either display pieces they’ve been working on, or get on stage and draw in front of a small crowd.
“This one’s Slow Jams, so the DJ will play a 2 hour set, and it’s for the artists to interpret that however they see fit, whether its the lyrics, or the title of the song, the band or the singer, something from the music video, or even just how it makes them feel”. The Art of Slow Jams will also feature interactive rooms.
King organises AoS events so that creatives and artists can connect in a humble setting. It allows you to showcase your art in a few different ways, in an environment where people find common ground through love of art and music. AoS sets an example for a new kind of sesh, one where we can channel our energies and utilise our senses to create something unique. Whether you’ve been doing art since you were young, or only just picked up a paint brush, all talents are welcome.
The Art of Sounds have held 8 events so far: Grime, RnB, Hip-Hop, Funky House, Dance Hall, Garage, Carnival, and Carnival part 2. King also has plans for future AoS events to cover all the genres. There was brief mention of theme songs too. Wow.
The Art of Grime placed anger and tranquility in the same context. It’s not often that Grime is associated with something so therapeutic as drawing, which is why the concept of AoS is so important. A space for healthy expression is much needed in a society that is rife with pressure, anxiety and conflicting egos. AoS provides a hub where you can network, listen to tunes, harness your artistic imagination, and have a drink if you want to. What a juicy recipe!
The Art of Slow Jams will be held this Friday. Details and tickets can be found via Eventbrite. If this event sounds like you, come along and bring your friends. Or come alone. It’s entirely up to you! Whatever you do, don’t miss it.
