Waved by Jamal Bucanon is the Inspired Jazz Song You Need to Hear
Who is Jamal Bucanon and what is Waved?
The 23 year old Leicester raised and London resident wrote and produced and electronic/jazz track that we can’t stop playing. We spoke to Jamal about the inspiration behind the track, how he comes up with the sound for the new single, and the collaboration with director Amanda Marie-Rose. Citing influences from Skepta, The Streets, J Dilla, Kano and Floating Points, sonically ‘Waved’ is a Jazz inspired track with electronic undertones, all while feeling like a whimsical but alluring stroll with an intoxicated Jamal through London.
Music Video for Waved and interview below.
How would you best describe your sound when creating Waved?
It’s hard for me to put my finger on what exactly my sound is. I draw a lot of inspiration from the UK and I think that shines through in my music. Some of the big inspirations for me have been Skepta, Kano and others. I also at the time of making this record was inspired by Taylor McFerrin maybe that explains the experimental jazz sounds but I’d say I have to define my music as UK sounding.
How hands on are you in production on Waved, the vocals and production blend so well?
In terms of how hands-on with this track I have been, I’d say very. I actually produced the whole track and then got my good friend and collaborator John Calvert to do some additional production and to do the mix as well, I love to be heavily involved in all aspects. In terms of the lyrics and recording that was all me as well, it was a pretty quick song to write as it was all very chilled out and honest, I find when you write like that it flows very easily and you don’t have to think too hard.
Tell us about the music video concept for Waved and how it came about?
The concept for the video was something I had a very strong idea for a good few years. I actually shot an old version of this video a long time ago with the amazing Amanda Marie Rose (Director) it was something I couldn’t have done without her. We decided to re-shoot the video for this drop and this is where Amanda really revamped the video and showed just how talented she is. The whole idea for the video was to show the duality of being ‘waved’ versus being sober and what that might look like, through Amanda’s cinematic eye I think we really captured ‘waved’ in its purity and the essence of the song as well.
